There’s also some that buck tradition. Despite Symphogear being a magical girl anime about the love and friendship between young women, I’d classify it as shounen instead of shojo due to the main character’s attitude, the fight scenes, and the general things that appeal to people.

Everyone I know uses the word shonen to describe shows like MHA and Bleach based on plot and trope, not the mere fact that the protagonist is a boy child.
Names don't have to be literal, and often aren't. I'm not terribly fiery, for example.
