Anyone else get the feeling the two groups of 50 pigs each were specifically given to this man by professors so that you could set up a control group with the normal acorns and an experimental group with the new recipe to prove to the farmers that this stuff was good and useful, but this guy forgot all that extra bits and just said two groups of 50?

He needed two groups of fifty pigs because he needed a control group:

You feed group one natural acorns, and you feed group two the artificial acorns.

You take observations and keep tabs on weight on each group, then see what the results are in two months, six months, etc.

He was essentially asking them to fund a study.
