A tanker carrying 1.4 million litres of oil has capsized off Manila Bay in the Philippines.
Strong currents are causing the spill to spread quickly.
16 of the crew members on board the tanker have been rescued, but one has died.

Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Lo has the latest from the Philippines capital, Manila

Lea Guerrero is the Greenpeace Philippines country director.
She says communities in the Philippines along the affected areas of the spill will feel the impact for a long time to come.

Why would that tanker have clearance to embark on the tail of a major typhoon? The spillage containment and ultimately clean up will be immeasurably devastating. Sad.

Goodbye reefs. Goodbye tourism. Goodbye Philippines.

Not good.

The number of unregulated ships, with a race to the bottom on wages, shadow fleets peddling villains sanctioned goons, old poorly maintained equipment, growing international conflicts, more severe weather… these type of disasters might well become more common, with unforeseen consequences, seriously harming shores far away for years to come…

Just watched this ... why wasn't the first question you asked the reporter about the person missing???
Instead the only thing that you thought was important was the oils spillage?

Oil spills are one of many problems with fossil fuels that the industry doesn't like talking about. Electricity is not perfect but so many online will show only the downside of it and never oil's environmental problems.

Barnaby, Bataan is in Central Luzon, not Northern. West of Manila, east of Manila Bay.
- I'm sorry, geonerd here. 😅

No identification as to WHO the tanker belonged to, and WHO is responsible for the cleanup.
Where is the help of your usa masters? WHY does the usa have bases in the Philippines?

Can't even drive a tanker or contain the oil spill.
But want to take on China 😀.

For me it sounds like Philipines dont really know how to deal with it, just wondering why the americans are not there for the rescue

I'm ashamed of the Philippine government. We're facing another environmental disaster affecting the poor, and we lack the necessary equipment. We can't defend our own land and have to rely on American help. Shame on you and your government for bringing disgrace to Filipinos worldwide.

I would like to know if China is going to do anything to help ? Their boats should be closeby

The Chinese have been using crude oil as cooking oil for many years now.
