In years past, there were many SSDs worth picking from, today there are far fewer. These will change over time, however this list is accurate as of January 2023:

— Premium Gen4 NVMe Drives

— Budget NVMe Drives

— Premium SATA Drives (with DRAM)

— Budget SATA Drives (without DRAM)

On each product page, you can generally select your size, compare the prices at the size you're looking for as one brand might be a better deal at 1TB, but another is a better deal at 2TB, and so on.

I'll say it again and again. I love your history type vids and the long form format. Thanks

Recently converted a couple of old 128 GB NVMe SSD's to external storage devices by putting them in enclosures. A great way to breathe new life into old drives and make them essentially large USB flash drives. I have found these enclosures can be picky about the drives they accept, though.

This is awesome. I love these conversations. Thanks Tech!

Two thoughts. One: Maybe start putting a little note in the box where the drive is going. When it moves and you find the box, update the note. IF you get rid of the old boxes but keep one from each stack, then maybe a note on how many you had and a thought or two goes into the remaining box.
Second: A good use for old SSDs is to put them into a USB enclosure.

In February of 2021 I bought a XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB despite the issues that I read about, the controller changes, etc. I, like you, have been a fan of ADATA for years, this is my 3rd or 4th ADATA drive, first m.2 (period). Your reviews were still positive enough to keep me buying it. I haven't had any issues out of the drive, that I know of, thus far. I am upgrading most of my hardware right now, CPU MOBO and RAM, keeping the 3080ti and theoretically this drive for now until I acquire a new 4TB drive. I came to your channel for suggestions on a 4TB option and found this video. I don't know how to tell which controller or memory modules I have and I doubt I still have the box at this point. I have also only had one SSD fail so far, like you, one of those troubled OCZ SSD drives.

Does anyone keep track off all the gold stars they get? Just curious. Anyway, I like these history videos. They give me perspective as to where the tech has gone and where it come from. I have some of this older hardware and it's interesting to see how it stacks up to modern drives. Also gives me perspective on if it's worth upgrading or not.

Tech, I am wearing your 'Good luck with that' t-shirt as we speak and watching this video. Always look forward to seeing your vids. Keep up the good work! I do miss the Roque Tech live streams though.

I'm so into this. Thank you for making this series! I've got stories too! I had to send roughtly 20-30 of adatas su635 qlc sata drives in for RMA and they sent me a new su800s as replacement LOL. Another secret, I've found crucial's MX500 not be so good, faulty firmware, failiures, etc. It's no samsung EVO and never will be.

I own 2x 2TB SX8200 PROs, bought them 2-3 months ago. I use them as secondary drives for my main PC(Game drive) and work laptop(Project storage and VMs). Knew about the controversy, but at the price they were being offered they were unbeatable. 2TB nvme drives with 970 EVO-like specs, for 150$ equivalent in my country, nothing else was even close. They were cheaper than Samsung QVO SATA drives of equivalent size. The closest drives with simillar performance (Kingston KC2500) sell for ~30% higher price at 195$ equivalent. So as long as the performance wasn't horrible and data integrity wasn't compromised I was fine with it.

My desktop has a 1TB 980 Pro boot drive, laptop has an 1TB OEM drive with comparable performance to the SX8200 PROs.

I've quite a bit of the SX8200 Pro drives. It wasn't until I was rebuilding a Gigabyte Z390 system that I had any issues. I was using a 1 TB model, fully installed Win10 and on one of the update reboots it decided to hang without booting. So off troubleshooting. I finally discovered it was that specific drive that was causing issues. It was so bad the bios would hang and not even POST. I pulled some other SX 8200 Pro drives that were being use in other systems to further test. Getting mixed results I finally determined it was different controller chips on these drives.
There was a long topic discussing this on the now defunct Gigabyte user forums. I sent several of mine back to Amazon as failed. I only had this issue on that one Gigabyte motherboard.

When I was building my gaming PC I got a 2Tb Intel 660p for my games and a 500Gb Samsung 970 Evo Plus as a boot drive and later got a 1tb WD Black SN 750 for the games that i play more often. Few weeks ago replaced that WD Black with a 2tb Nextorage G-Series and that SSD its a beast, it worth every cent I paid for it, it gives me like ~99% of Samsung 990 Pro for significantly less money. I believe that it is still on sale, for me ended up costing $195 after shipping because Newegg doesn't offer free shipping to Puerto Rico.

Wish someone would do a video covering current motherboards (both Intel and AMD side).

The ADATA SU650 works pretty well in my Raspberry pie 4 retro gaming machine, it was dirt cheap.

I have both a 2tb Adata SX8200 Pro and a 2tb Samsung 970 Evo Plus as boot drives; I don't notice any difference between the two. Both have performed flawlessly; though to me the issues others have had with Adata is a reminder to maintain backups regardless.

Having picked up the SX8200 Pro during prime day a couple years ago and a 970 Evo Plus open box at a Microcenter; I have gotten plenty of value and performance out of both and have no regrets over the purchase despite the controversy.

Great video as always!

Unrelated Tech, I finally put up my ewin chair! Got the Black racing. Pretty good chair so far! Thanks for the recommendation! I did use your code!

Don't underestimate older enterprise drives for secondary storage. My best $/GB drive is a 3.84TB PM983 22110 m.2 (open box unused). I see some fairly good prices on 7.68TB u 2 drives now you need a pcie converter which is like $40.
