I always think that the people who make the most profound music, at some level, really understand what quiet means, and that they channel that understanding when they compose.

I also think that the people who make the most profound music, at some level, really have a personal connection with the absence of sound, which is different from just "quiet" in that there is a music inside of them even when all other songs and voices have died away. The saying "Very few people are strong enough to handle the power of silence" comes to mind whenever I listen to Brian Crain's music, and I love it. There's a tranquility at it's core, something that says "Find the power of your aloneness; be solitary in your experience."
