Enjoy my provocative interview with Dr. Burkitt during his visit to Loma Linda University in Southern California on May 23, 1990.
Dr. Denis Burkitt's (1911 - 1993) major contribution to medical science came when he noticed that diseases widespread in Western countries are absent in the Third World. On the basis of his convictions, he launched a worldwide crusade to change the diet in developed countries by recommending Westerners mimic the foods habits of his African patients. He reported, "In Africa, treating people who live largely off the land on vegetables they grow, I hardly ever saw cases of many of the most common diseases in the United States and England -- including coronary heart disease, adult-onset diabetes, varicose veins, obesity, diverticulitis, appendicitis, gallstones, dental cavities, hemorrhoids, hiatus hernias, and constipation. In 20 years of surgery in Africa, I had to remove exactly one gallstone." While serving as head of the governmental health services he saw more than 10 million people flourish on grains and tubers; eating almost no meats, dairy products or processed foods.

At 23 I may not have a fancy car, a big house, heck, even a steady income...but boy am I thankful to have all the information Dr. McDougall has given us!

My John Burkitt is a cousin of Dr. Denis Burkitt. He loves to eat cereal already so he is halfway there. So I am hopeful that in the not too distant future my sweetie will join me in Dr. McDougal's food plan. I have lost eight pounds in about two weeks and feeling good. Thanks Doc and Mary!

This is the greatest interview of all time. Pritikin takes #2 in my opinion.

This interview contains great knowledge. And, this interview is a wonderful example of how an interview should be conducted. Dr. McDougall never interrupts the interviewee.

I can see why Dr.McDougall was influenced by this highly intelligent and sincere Doctor. It is a gift to us all that gifted Dr.McDougall crossed paths with this amazingly gifted man. I may want to listen to this a few times to make sure I don't miss any life enhancing information.

“The sadness to me (and this particularly concerns the cancer field) is that all the emphasis today is put on diagnosis and treatment of disease, and yet we are never going to reduce any disease by early diagnosis or treatment. The only way you reduce disease (other than infectious disease, by immunization)… is to identify causative factors and reduce causative factors. Yet all the money goes into early diagnosis and treatment….Therapeutic medicine is where the money is.”

That comment is so important to remember when thinking about the health of ourselves and other loved ones.

Thanks Dr McD. I worked with Dr Dennis Burkitt's brother, a general surgeon, Dr Robin Burkitt in 1967 at Ashford Hospital in MDDX, UK.He was also a greatly passionate surgeon and a fine human being like his brother. Enjoyed the interview.
I also found a copy of Dennis Burkitt's book, "Don't forget Fiber in your Diet" Of course it is a way to stay away from many GI diseases. Thanks again.

What a great Doctor, born 1911, died 1993, even lost one eye when he was a child. He left behind magic for us all, thank you so much Dr Den.

Probably my 2nd favorite interview on YouTube, preceded only by the Pritikin interview.

Dr McDougall knew this information would be lost if he hadn’t filmed it. This and the Nathan Pritikin interview show proof that Dr McDougall can see the future. GREAT THINKING, Dr McDougall 👊🏼

This interview is a treasure. Burkitt is an inspiration. He felt the call to become a physician and serve in Africa. You never know where life will lead. His was a great life and what a witness.
