The Mausoleum of Baroness Demidoff - a Portal of Nightmares

In 1818 the Russian Princess Elisabeth Demidoff died at Paris, aged 39. A massive mausoleum, a temple in style - was raised above her grave at Père Lachaise, in the classical taste of the time. Many point to the symbols on the tomb as well as wolf heads and bats sculptures and the symbol of a knot, thought to be the Knot of Hercules symbolizing the link between life and death. By all rights, this lavish monument for a very rich woman should have been merely another attraction for Sunday strollers at the famous Paris cemetery, but strange stories began to circulate about the tomb and its occupant....

Many, many thanks to my patrons on Patreon for enabling me to keep going – bless you all!

Some of the topics discussed on the 'blah blah' towards the end of video, because of the upload date, may no longer be relevant. Later videos are more graphic in content, and will most certainly be demonetised by YouTube; nevertheless, thanks to my loyal Patreon patrons, I will eventually post them here too despite YouTube's advertiser friendly policy. Link to my Patreon page and other sites under the description :)

The dead do not scary me....
But the living is another story.

Well, after 30 days of complete isolation because of the lockdown in South Africa, I may consider it. I mean, talking to a corpse or a vampire will be more interesting than planting myself in front of a mirror to converse with myself. But then ... I think I'll continue with the conversations with myself. At least I always win the arguments.

She either had a great dark sense of humour or she wanted a sort of bodyguard for her tomb...either way what an interesting spooky story Oddie! Loved it 😃

To be honest I would love to hear you narrate Poe! Your voice is perfect for the Cask of Amontillado and the Fall of the House of Usher

Going an entire year without bathing- or, more accurately, going an entire year neglecting every aspect of personal hygiene- would probably drive most people crazy.

I think she put that challenge in her Will just to see who was greedy enough to go through with it, to see what greed can do to a person, but to live in a Mausoleum alone with a corpse in a crystal casket, only allowed to read, 1 walk per night, food delivered, a bucket for a toilet....just not possible and I think she knew the challenge would never be met. I think the true scare in this whole idea is the MIND of someone willing to attempt such a grim and morbid task, and not so much the corpse that lies those are just my thoughts :-) Excellent read APPLAUSE FOR SARA...PS---> Yes to the Podcasts :-)

I visited that cemetery mainly because I wanted to visit Jim Morrison's grave but the whole cemetery is beautiful with so many famous people buried there--many of the tombs are works of art.

Bravo Sarah! Clearly, there is "something" going on in that crypt, otherwise someone would have made off with the million bucks by now. I thought I would be up to the challenge, until I saw the creepy face at the end. There is just no easy way of getting a million dollars! There is always a catch.
Thank you for this Sarah & Oddie! I have never heard this story before now.

This reminds me of a line from a favorite film. "The rich, you know why they're so odd? Because they can afford to be."

This has to be the greatest prank in human history. However morbid, the Baroness sure had a sense of humor. Thanks for the very creepy video, Oddie :)

Taps _play_, then taps _like_ straight away, because I know I’m going to like it.

Edit: Oddy, you really should have a show on telly. Late at night, when it’s dark, and viewers are snuggled up, warm and ready for bed. Dim the lights, and enjoy ...

"a jabbering idiot" - what a nice statement to be written in official newspaper back in the day, haha xD
Loved this story, so many new ones I discover just by following this channel.
I'd probably be able to spend 365 days together in a tomb with a corpse. The only thing is - I would most likely die without showering myself for a year!

Sometimes I get cabin fever with working from home and not seeing as many people as I would like. But your voice, even when describing the macabre, is a very calming influence. I look forward to work now because I listen to you during my workday.

Would I take the challenge? No freaking way. That being said, Baroness Demidoff would still only be the third scariest roommate I've ever had.

What a interesting bit of history. Answer to the question at the end: Yes I would take the challenge. I have always been intrigued with paranormal and mythical creatures. It is not the dead you have to be afraid of but the living. I also believe that every myth has a tid bit of truth behind it. Love the video and the story. Pod cast would be awesome as well. =)
