Pretty sure there’s another looking out for you during Novosibirsk. You can spot him on top of the institute.

In the very beginning of 2033 in the tutorial station, as soon as you've given mobility control for the first time, go find a dark corner away from quest guy and hide in the shadows. You'll start hearing voices slowly getting louder and it culminates in a little audio Easter egg that's very scary and nice. Idk if everyone knows about this but it's pretty cool to do in every new start.

The dark ones have secretly been following the crew all this time.
Like at the "Haunted" house in the volga, all those hallucinations in the dead city.

They were with artyom all along.

Guss in a sense the dark ones are like family to Artyom. I mean as a little boy, a dark one did save Artyom and that point communicated with him, in a way the dark ones have adopted him. And this in a way shows they are still watching from the distance
