Knicks rumors continue to circle around Donovan Mitchell as now the latest NBA rumors suggest that Tom Thibodeau would rather trade RJ Barrett instead of Quentin Grimes in a Donovan Mitchell trade. Marc Berman on latest Knicks trade rumors:
- Coach Tom Thibodeau is still keenly interested in making Mitchell a Knick and has recently laid low, knowing the offseason work isn’t complete. There is belief around the league Thibodeau would prefer to give up Barrett in a deal than shooting guard Quentin Grimes, who is coming off a solid rookie year, and a summer league in which he looked quicker and more sculpted. Grimes is a better defender and 3-point shooter than Barrett.
- According to multiple industry sources, the Knicks were turned off by Utah team president Danny Ainge’s initial demands, when he asked in July for a package of seven first-round picks and players. Talks died, but recently there has been renewed back-and-forth. The Knicks’ major concern, according to sources, is giving away too many future assets, which could leave them stuck in an area far below championship contender
- Adding Mitchell, they believe, would be good enough for a 10-game leap to 47 victories. That would put them straight into the playoffs as viable second-round threats. They are excited that a backcourt tandem of Jalen Brunson and Mitchell, with RJ Barrett, Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson in the frontcourt, and Derrick Rose and Immanuel Quickley as the top two guards off the bench, would make them a top-six Eastern team.

It was bad enough having to choose between Grimes, IQ, and Obi, but I'm not cool with sending them RJ. I hate that this report came out and I hope that Thibs didn't say that, but I wouldn't be surprised at this point. He's desperate to get us back in the playoffs and probably sees moving RJ as his way there if need be. Losing RJ might make we wanna turn in my Knick fandome. That would be a tough decision to live with.

Any talks of RJ in trades as DA wants picks and not trying to pay RJ 30m. All he wants is picks and cheap players/expiring contracts.

I would rather not make the trade at all, if I had to move either player. The thing is, the Knicks don't "have to" include anyone that they really value. They just have to make a fair offer. If someone else is crazy enough to offer Ainge a "haul" for Mitchell, good luck to them. No deal is better than a bad deal!

Remember he said that Thibodeau not Rose, West and Perry prefer Grimes over RJ. Why is this 🦕 coach still here? Or better yet, why did they hire him in first place? 🤔 He had no other offers because smart organizations knows that Tom irritating Thibodeau is on the verge of extinction.
