Now that BendixKing's KSN770 retrofit navigator is certified and shipping, it's a worthy alternative to models from Garmin and Avidyne — while priced thousands less. But many buyers are unfamiliar with the KSN770's multi-function capabilities, its feature set, and its flight-planning capabilities. Aviation Consumer magazine editor Larry Anglisano put the KSN770 — and the company's other retrofit systems — on his test bench for a closer look.

In this video, BendixKing's Chuck Burkhead provides a hands-on demonstration.

I've been using it for a few months now, and it works pretty good. But in my opinion, inserting a flight plan is harder than it needs to be. There is a lot of back and forth when constructing a flight plan. I think you should be able to enter the flight plan the way you read it off your clearance. I think entering the beginning, airway and then choosing the exit point from a list is a much faster process. Than having to look up and down and going back and forth between fixes. I just believe that there are more button presses and typing involved than other pieces of equipment out there.

I've been servicing and selling Bendix/King gear for over three decades. So many dealers surrendered their dealerships this summer and many within the industry see a full collapse of B/K GA Avionics within a year or so due to marketing and support failures. Imagine you've bought precursors to this equipment with an understanding that you had access to an extensive dealer network only to be told now by your very angry dealer that they are prohibited from servicing your radio. Chuck and Larry how would you feel if the backlighting went out on your truck radio on the way home tonight only to discover that a letter in the mail from GM said they had a great new program that prevents service of the component but lucky you, must now "Exchange" the whole vehicle or pay thousands of dollars for "reconditioning"? Ed King is rolling over in his grave, ask yourselves why Garmin has cleaned B/K's clocks! I know of not a single pilot or tech that doesn't see the 770 as a day late and several dollars short. The KT-74 is ADS-B out only (AFAIK). Where is the traffic info coming from? I hope it is not limited to mode S TIS "TIS-A" only... Otherwise you'd have to spring for the GTX-345 to get TIS-B traffic adding $2K to that stack cost...
