Alicia’s Hands is the human and artistic portrait or Alicia de Larrocha, of a life devoted to study and musical improvement. Her hard work has been recognized by plenty of awards but this never disturbed her objective: to perform with the highest rigor and fidelity to the score.
Different characters or international renown such as Joaquin Achúcarro, André Previn, Maria Joao Pires or Martha Argerich, will speak about her technique, about her passion and the reasons why she was considered one of the best piano players of the 20th Century.
This is the story of an artist with small hands, a story of passion for the music and a journey about the power of desire to discover the woman beyond the pianist.

I've seen her, many years ago, in Rio de Janeiro. The program was gorgeous: Mozart sonata a minor; Beethoven sonata (?) and all the second half, only Ravel; Gaspard de la nuit.

When I looked at her hands on the disc of 1970 ( Grieg Mendelssohn), I was fascinated by their magic power. Alicia was my muse...

Alicia de Larrocha had relatively small hands, which surprised me when I met her back in 1971. However, her thumbs had the most amazing motility of movement I've ever seen and she could thus fully reach most any chord she wished to, or needed to, play. She was also a warm and gracious conversationalist. She will certainly be remembered as one of the very greatest pianists of her time.

Despite the small size, her hands are the most beautiful and standard of those of all pianists.

Gerard Schwartz! He's an amazing trumpeter and conductor. I think he's highly underrated as a musician.

She was a great musician, no doubt, but I think people are not telling the whole story when they say, wow, she had such small hands yet could she play so wonderfully. Her fingers were all about the same length, including her thumb and pinky, which were almost as long as her ring finger. Most people do not have that physical advantage, which is incredibly useful in playing octave runs accurately. She herself said that she could not have achieved what she did in her career, without that killer weapon of long little fingers. Take a look at still photos of her hands and it is obvious.
