I have had the privilege of watching this innings live (on telly) and have watched the highlights, reruns of this knock innumerable times since. However, what caught my attention today was the portion between 17:29 and 18:16, where Smudger hits the cover drive to bring up his 24th (and most important) test century. If you watch this separately, this little part of the video, of Smith finally getting the monkey off his back, if something to behold, this is not just cricket, this is something beyond. The pure emotions on this face, of relief at finally proving his worth to himself is something we can all relate to, as humans. This was his catharsis after the 1 year period of banishment from something he loves and lives. Such moments of emotion make his game such a joy to watch, as they go beyond the realms of sports. There will be many more memorable knocks in the future, but this one by Smudger on 1st August 2019 will always hold a special place in my heart. I don't know him personally but very rarely have I watched anyone bat and wished for their success, with bated breath; as if it's someone dear to me who's batting!

Broad actually bowled pretty well at him in this knock, best out of anyone, troubled him in more than 1 spell, so appropriate he got his wicket in the end. But besides that Smith looked almost impossible to bowl to. He just didn't miss when he couldn't afford to. He's also the only person I've ever seen smiling waiting to face while the bowler runs in. Dude just likes to bat!
