Evolution Simulator Source Code: (I can only hope there are no bugs):

Also, yes, I sound a lot like Tennis Ball.
I created this simulator with Processing 1.5.1. I probably should have mentioned that in the video.

I've literally rediscovered your channel like 10 times without realizing that it was your channel.

RIP 500 slowest creatures, and the ones who excelled in the unwanted direction.

"....it's not hard to succeed when your competition is randomly

Welp, that's all the motivation I need for the year!

Keep doing it until one gains sentience.

I would argue that distances should be absolute, a creature that's really fast at going backwards could just be flipped around, instead of killed...

I mean, your "worst" creature was actually the fastest out of them all, shame to lose such potential.

I think this would have worked better if you flipped creatures that went backwards and used the absolute value of their distance. This would have given a bump in early stages to fast creatures that happened to be placed backwards.

The creature that went to the left was quite good. You should optimize for absolute distance instead.

I think it's really cool that you let many different species pass on their genes, as opposed to most evolutionarily algorithms which just take the best creature and go from there

So then is God just some YouTuber who is spawning humans with random traits, sorting which ones are the best, and then hitting 'kill 500'?
Maybe.

I'm just as impressed by the user interface as the simulation

"Our 4th creature has what looks like a sail sticking up, but it's not catching any wind."

"Look at how symmetrical this creature is!!"

That has to be my favourite part of the whole video. Great job btw!

A few years ago, I started an evolution simulator. I recently went back to check on it, but apparently it already emerged from the simulated primordial soup.

4:27 wait a minute, that's so genius, the randomness of the selection process preserves the 'ideas' that didn't work, or at least some of their features. That means that ideas (sorry I know they are not ideas of anyone, but they are ideas in their own right) that overall may have failed, are explored to their fullest and incorporated into anything that benefits from it. Nature is the true genius, I am always humbled by the incredible results nature achieves without ever having to think, that's genius on a whole different level...

This video is righteous! The science is cool, the computer science is cool, I love the graphics and the narration couldn't be better. How this only has 2.3million views is a crime! This video series deserves an award and should be shown in every science class! Well done sir!
