My Sim Racing Rig No Longer Has a Monitor. Is This Genius?

By converting your monitor with a quick release, you can easily use a screen you already own rather than having to buy a whole new one dedicated to your sim racing rig. How do I know this? Because I'm doing it and it works superbly. As a result, I can now use the very same 34" Ultrawide on my main desk and rig with minimal effort switching between them. No need to buy another monitor to go racing!

In my case, my sim rig had the 'big' monitor and my main workdesk had the smaller 27" flat panel, and I always wished for a bigger display. I just didn't wanna spend that much money! This solved that problem for way, way less money.

You'll need 2 monitor mounts to do what I've done in this video, but you might feel it's economical to get a triple pack so don't forget about that.

If you have the space you can put your rig behind and facing your desk. There are monitor arms that will take a 43", so you can leave everything plugged in and just swivel it around. Works great.

I have considered this on a number of occasions and on every occasion has used it as an excuse to upgrade the rig monitor and use the cast off for the desktop instead.

Congratulations on your discipline sir.

I'd go one step further and recommend a pair of pigtail cables to minimize stress on the connectors on the monitor itself.

You're genuinely so down-to-earth and inspiring to me, even though I'm the lowest of the low as a sim racer (playing assetto corsa on a gamepad). The "You can knock a couple quid off with my discount code, I know it's not much but it's something" hit so hard as someone who's really, really poor.

Thanks.

This helped me so much! Currently I use a really long adjustable arm, and reposition it for desk / simrig use, the issue is I always end up with a compromised monitor possition. This is a much better solution for me, thank you!

Danny those Simlab monitor brackets saved my triple setup. I don't use the monitor mount though, but it looks great.
I had purchased a triple set up from Trak Racer and it was trash. The mounting brackets are ham fisted in every way - poor adjustability, incredibly heavy, and the I had to completely modify the Trak Racer stand alone triple screen unit to mount to my rig along with "redesigning" my rig literally from the ground up. It is bomb proof now, but we spent hours trying to get the screens to align properly.
Trak Racer has made a redesign, but it is still HEAVY and cumbersome.
One day browsing YT I saw a video about these mounts and I ordered them ASAP.
My triple screen setup is almost perfect along with the bezel kit.
But, I will be going to VR once AC Evo hits if it is good.
Waiting on you to do the testing.

I work from home so I have an all in one setup. I have a 49" monitor that's on an extended monitor arm, mounted to my standing desk. When I'm working, I push the monitor back against the wall and lower my desk to sit in my chair. When I'm ready to race, I pull the monitor out, raise the desk, and roll my 8020 rig under the desk since it's on caster wheels.

1:24 in and I already feel like I should just buy another monitor.

Was interesting to hear you talk about his in the stream. Great seeing it in action. And it seems to work absolutly fine 👍

For cables you can buy short female-male adapters and place the ends of it in some more accessible place, should be a bit easier to reconnect. Awesome idea btw

Willing to bet 6 packets of chips that you will get sick of this. I’ve done something similar before, and it was pretty annoying the 10th time.

Just a little bit of 3d printing and design you could make a bracket that automatically plugs & unplugs the monitor as you attach it. You might need a couple extra cables to situate the plugs correctly but that wouldn't be so hard to do.

What a simple but great idea mate, thanks for highlighting it.

Clever! Glad to see this while I'm still in my racing-at-my-desk phase. Thanks for the tip!

I just built a custom rig out of 8040 aluminium profile that functions as both a computer desk and a racing simulator.

Ive never understood why more people dont do this. Perhaps its the racing seats people seem to insist on using. Ive got a high end desk chair seat base for long term comfort and a junkyard seat back from a Porsche to hold me from sliding side to side and that is strong enough to not flex under heavy braking. Achieves the best of both seat types

I love the idea Danny! This seems like something I'd come up with. I think coming up with a hot-swappable DIY solution that manages the cables as well might also be a really cool idea!

If there are short hdmi-in—hdmi-out cables, you could affix these to the back of the monitor at a location that is easier to plug into

Oh man. I was looking for this about a year ago. Very cool.

This is very cool, i did something pretty much the opposite where i keep my monitor on my desk and then my rig has workbench coasters on it so i can quickly slide it under my desk, lower it and keep it super solid.

Very interesting idea! I did some thing similar with gas monitor arms and the rest of my rig on castor wheels.
