RunCore InVincible SSD with Physical Self-Destruction -- Official Launch

A less subtle method is the physical destruction of your SSD by applying an over-current to the NAND flash memory and thereby physically destroying these.

Actually, it does distruct.
The way it is done is that the chips run on +5VDC.
The computer can provide -12VDC at a few amps.
It is this reverse 12 volts that does the deed.
Take a device intended for one polarity and feed it reverse voltage and you will see things like chips cracking and smoking.
So, you can do the exact same thing with a relay and nearly any SSD, provided it has no reverse and surge protection, usually one element on the power input.

I dont think you understand exactly what they mean.
What is implied, is that the end user is invincible from espionage, say if you are in a tight legal situation and your HDD needs to be turned over to the Department of Justice, the SD option helps exponentially allowing you to render that seizure useless.

I can see those two buttons being an issue if you are mad enough to use it in a normal desktop or laptop...(Accidentally hitting the buttons being one issue) or if you're colourblind and mistake the red button for the green one...

One of the worlds largest and this is the best vid they can come up with?

Okay so sure you can erase or destroy your information as long as you are present but that does nothing to prevent someone from physically stealing your drive while you don't have it in your possession What they need is an auto destruct mechanism that is automatically activated under certain conditions ie disconnection from motherboard, or failing to access and enter a code within a set amount of time so if u are detained it will destruct before the warrant is procured

Well it depends on where the overwrite comes from. If it's a signal from the computer you'll run into the problems caused by over partitioning. Some SSDs do have dedicated instructions to do exactly what you suggested, but it takes some time to complete. However the majority of SSDs claiming to have a secure erase function simply remove the partition, like throwing out a map. However a determined person could recover the data.

Smoke appears to be fake, as normal "smoked" chips takes longer than that to release smoke through its casing. Not to mention that the photo of the damaged board is massively doctored with a lot of swirl effects, which is very easy to see when you know silk screened lines are not supposed to be curved.

Ok I see what your saying, I think its largely an issue of whether a drive supports it. Ars Technica has a good article on issues with SSD secure erases

Well, the Feds could still check the internet logs from the ISP. But if downloading from an open wifi, then sure. Would work quite well.

How do you know it doesn't have a internal power source which will cause a surge?

Glad she actually vomited out the word "security" so we know that's REALLY really what she said.

this reminds me a lot of something out of Mission Impossible

This is a genius company, if someone uses this functionality, they'll come back for more!

Nice after effects yo. And good job on that photoshop bro.

The computer is just about to fall off the table. Let's see if it's also invincible.

The buttons are too sensitive.removal of a key would be more suitable.
If the machine has no power then the press of a button isn't going to destroy anything. FBI kills power and then storms the house, simple.
This system would be benefited by some form of high voltage capacitor so if the power did suddenly die the capacitor would still allow destruction.

When I have sensitive data I need to be destroyed I just leave the laptop open overnight and my cat will have gnawed and scratched the data away.

I think the red button should be covered to prevent unwanted use

even a child can see that the smoke is artificial and made with computer effects.

Data security is an issue for SSD as there are few secure deletion options. SSD's are over provisioned, secure deletion tools would not be able to delete data in that part. I'm not how their smart delete works but I'm guessing that it deletes the partition information which would make encrypted data unrecoverable without a password. Physical destruction is the only way to be sure that data can never be recovered, valuable for clandestine applications.
