At the end of competitions I’m always TRYING to be energetic but I’m always so exhausted and on the verge of passing out that I can only wave my hands up 💀

My aunt was a cheerleader in 1955. The skirts were below their knee and it was mostly jumping up and down while holding a megaphone and leading the audience in cheers. By the time I became a cheerleader in the 90s it was a weird mix of leading cheers, celebration, and dance routines with very low stakes pyramids, some lifts and I think one basket catch move where we popped the girl back up into top of the pyramid. By the time I was a college professor, I had students missing class because the fell at a competition from some elaborate move where they were tossed feet into the air repeatedly and ended up with a concussion and they were always so serious and sounded like barking dogs to get their voices to project further. I didn't much enjoy my one year as a cheerleader, but even so I had some fun and this just always looked like it sucked the joy out of it. Especially if you compare it to the insane high energy cheer chanting of my aunt's glory days. It's wild to see things progress as time goes on. Curious what it will look like in another four decades.

after we get off the mat like at comps they don’t let us get excited till we’re off the mat, we all celebrate and jump and scream right after tho

I loved watching cheer competitions on ESPN in the 90s and the end was the best freakin part, they'd go nuts when they nailed the routine.

I was a cheerleader "back in the day" for 7 years. 1975-1982. Every year from 7th grade; my 1st year, of Jr. High. Through all 4 years of HS. Through my 1st year of college. Our uniforms were wool skirts & and long sleeved sweaters. In JH, we literally wore white Bobby socks and black & white saddle shoes. In HS, we still had wool skirts (a bit shorter) and long sleeved sweaters, but we wore white Keds on our feet. I loved it! Cheer is so different from the 70s and 80s. 📣

I empathize with the girl on the ground- literally me after competing

I was amazed by the second group in the background doing exactly the same. I watched it 3 more times and realised the girl at the end even stayed lying down and a guy gave a girl a piggy back exactly the same as the front group. And then I realised it was literally a mirror 😅
