The illustrious "Push Pull" technique. I first learned about this technique from Jojo Mayers work and his fantastic instructional DVD "Secret Weapons For The Modern Drummer". There are multiple variations of this technique, I chose what I thought the most versatile one to breakdown here.

In this lesson I'lI walk through the motions, things to watch out for and even go through a couple exercises for developing it. For those who are looking to finally crack those "Tony Fives", this is the missing piece you are looking for.

What an incredible instruction. Thanks so much! Talent like yours really pushes beginners like me far above where we are.

The key for me was to bend my thumb (like Jojo Mayer and Ramon Montagner) during the pull, it takes time to learn but it gives more speed and power, a good exercice is to play a continuous push pull with an accent on the pull, at a comfortable tempo, and slowly increase day after day

Another tip for the fast ride groupings is to really focus on the fluidity of the movement to get one motion for the whole grouping without stuttering.
Watch yoni madar if you want to se mastery of motion, this guy is incredible what he can do in one swipe of his right and left hand (he practises every single technique with both hands as well as the drumset mirrored and non mirrored…) 😂

I struggled at first because I used 7A or even American Jazz 5 sticks that are too light too control and don't provide that much bounce. Heavier sticks are better to start with, at least 5A.

Like probably many other drummers, I used to study Buddy Rich's left hand in every video I could find. It almost appeared as though he was propelling the stick with a movement like snapping his fingers. I don't know about anyone else, but after decades I still can't do that trick. I studied with Joe Morello, and his left-hand triplets were a completely different technique based on Moeller - but it can't be applied to the conitinuous stream of 2s and 4s that Buddy did. Joe called his triplets "catching the bounce."

Can I ask you a stupid question? When you say " only get a few strokes in at the new tempo", is that because you're literally bouncing the stick, and therefore when you close your hand in during the pull, you;re actually just following the bounce of the stick and you're not actually physically "pulling" the stick with your fingers into the closed position? My push/pull is ok, but I;m trying to reach that next echelon of speed, and I think my technique is holding me back. I have a problem with over--thinking things, , and usually I'll " come around" after torturing myself, , and typically when I come around, It ends up that its a lot more of a " natural" motion.. But, yeah.. long story short.. I'm just a little confused on how much i'm supposed to interact with the stick on the close. Thank you!!

Drummers: Take Note...this is how you teach. Don't come on You Tube and play as fast as you can and drink coffee laughing at the viewer. That's not teaching anyone anything. Spyker can teach!

Although this is interesting if you do a double stroke role at very high speeds and you take one hand away you are doing a push pull ROLL. The technique Buddy Rich used to do one-handed roles was very different than this!

The things that you are showing are legit but are front fulcrum based and rely on rebound mostly.

This technique is nice but it wont get everybody to such speed how fast he moves his fingers. Not everybody can learn it as it depends on personal limits.
