Elise just showed the textbook way to beat Naomi by making her ruuuun

Osaka’s inability to break really hurt her here. All it took was a break in each set to do her in.

Mertens plugging it to Osaka's backhand the whole time, interesting tactic

All of those comments made in her first round match about her being back, was way too soon to say. She’s definitely not back and not sure she will ever get there again. I have my doubts.

I got ino tennis last year at the Australian open and always looked at mertens as a doubles player. That serve wqs crazy!

Naomi’s biggest weakness by far is her returning. About half of Merten’s serves weren’t returned…

Mertens played really smartly here-chipping back returns and slicing to mix up the pace. Coupled with strong serving

I hope Osaka will continue to 'power up' her hard tennis court technique and get good result on the following US series and US open.

Mertens played the percentages, keeping the ball in play and waiting for unforced errors. It worked well, helped out by some big serves. Osaka has great power but she's not as steady now as she was a few years ago.

Osaka is still finding her game.

We all have to agree that if mertens is mentally inside the match she really is a great player. That serve backhand and speed are really great weapons

naomi’s lack of net game development is starting to creep up on her. she isn’t as mobile and dangerous out of the corners like during her top form. being able to come in behind some of those big shots would help her keep up with the likes of paolini and swiatek (great movers)

Naomi is only back on tour a few months. What is with throwing cold water on her already?
Is there such a thing as giving a person time to get back on track? I really hate some of the numskull comments.

After seeing Naomi’s performance against Ons Jabeur I thought this might be her tournament but i guess she’s “still finding her game”

10 years ago Mertens was someone no one wanted to play. A real tennis technician. Her, Julia Gorges and Andrea Petkovik. But Serena was in her peak form again.

"Well she isn’t good on clay but wait for the hardcourt season- she will rocket".
"Well, she isn’t really good on grass, wait for the hardcourt season - back in the top ten".
Hardcourt Season: "Well the courts are a bit slow here. You wait until Cincinnati and boom, US Open champion again."

The strategy of dismantling Naomi Osaka is to compete under the control and composure. It denotes the real trait and attribute of Elise Mertens. She is one of the tennis competitors who unveils the most viable approaches in order to dispatch these types of rivals and opponents. Elise was broadly serene and calm along the whole appearance against Naomi. That was the determinative factor to gain the showdown within this step. Massive congratulations to Elise Mertens!

Osaka is getting better and better in every tournament she plays. Best of luck. Congrats to Mertens.

Give effort by Naomi, but Mertens was in another gear.

Maybe the faster conditions at Cincinnati and at the US Open will suit Naomi game better.
Mertens has her number lately on slow hard courts this year.
