Tape Measure Tricks and Tips

These are just a few of the tricks I have learned over the years to become more proficient with the tape measure. If you have any I missed, let me know in the comments below.

Tip from me, obvious to some but not to all: hook on some tapes is not riveted tightly so it moves slightly back-and-forth, it's deliberate, when you measure the inside it will push in, and when hooking on something it will go back slightly, this is to automatically compensate the thickness of the hook itself, so the measurement is accurate in both scenarios.

Wipe down tapes with either wax paper or a rag sprayed with silicone spray.
Makes them roll up so much smoother!

I use mark “#3” unless the rare occasion I’m laying out and someone’s helping me or there’s usually an x involved, there’s also the rare topic of which side of the line when using “fat” marks as in even sharp soapstone, sharpie or other such non-scribe lines so I’ll put an x on the cut side for on the money, x on the line if it’s not crucial or an x on the other side to cut proud/extra for grinding or sanding to fit.

If you learn how to squat, that skill will take care of any knee discomfort you may have. If you cannot squat, how, in the future will you get off the toilet? Just saying. I understand that roofing is hard on the knees, granted.
