Author and illustrator Mike Curato discusses his book "Flamer". Curato draws on his own experiences in his debut young adult graphic novel, telling a difficult story with humor, compassion, and love. "Flamer" is the story of Aiden, a chubby teenage Filipino/white kid, who is away at scout camp the summer before his first year of high school in 1995. Aiden has to navigate friendships, bullying, racism, and body image, all while confronting his sexual identity. Curato shares his creative process while writing this book, and the story's relevance to queer youth today.

Mike Curato is an award-winning author/illustrator of books for children. His debut picture book title, Little Elliot, Big City has won numerous awards (including an Ezra Jack Keats New Illustrator Honor and The Society of Illustrators Founder’s Award) and has been translated into fourteen different languages. Curato has also illustrated books written by other authors including Worm Loves Worm by J.J. Austrian, All the Way to Havana by Margarita Engle, What if… by Samantha Berger, and The Power of One by Trudy Ludwig.

Moderated by Michael Bolognino.

Mike did you really defile a Mt. Dew bottle with friends? Was it necessary to tell kids today? Young adult are age 18-25 years old not 12 years and up, Google.
