Episode 210: Small Groups

This small group session looks at the goalkeepers ability to not only make effective stop to angled shots but to transition around goal with lateral movement but also advancing and retreating movements.

The goalkeeper starts with two players at angled positions around the box, they tranition over a step box twice with high knees and lateral movement so not to cross feet. On completing this movement the goalkeeper advances to a marker before retreating to set and make the save.

1. Feet must be fast and coordinated, high knees to help create strong legs through pushing up over the box and arms can be used to power through with momentum.
2. Advancing to the marker recreates the putting the player under pressure while retreating aloows the goalkeeper to gain as much reaction time as they need. These movements can then be progressed within your session to include the players coming into the box rather than always shoot or the service when the goalkeeper retreats progressing to a throw to recreate a lobbed shot or cross.
3. The shot is performed as soon as the goalkeeper touches the marker, with movement being made while they retreat or are in an advanced position. Due to the players being on angle this brings rebounds into play when a parry has been used to make the save. Rebounds are always live and the players needed to be switched on to capitalise on potential chances.

Watch for:
Off balanced - body weight should be forward with them on their toes as going backwards towards goal can result in goalkeepers falling, using feet more or diving towards goal.
Pressure - Shooting can result in lots of parryin of the ball due to the pressure on them to catch. Challenge them with a save is good but a catch can be great within the right situation. Its training, would you rather they be attempting to catch everything or happy pushing the ball away?
