Didn't read the comments, probably somebody already mentioned it. Your teeth aren't stained along the gum have receding gum line there. A side effect of braces. Basically the part where your teeth don't have enamel is exposed. You cannot whiten that. The dentine is just more yellow. Exposed dentine also makes them more sensitive. Which explains some of that extreme sensitivity during bleaching

I’m surprised they didn’t clean your teeth before putting braces on. You should have a professional cleaning at least every six months. You also have gum recession that could need a graft.

Hi Isabelle! I had braces for 4 years, and I recently got them off, which was so exciting! But here are a couple tips for post-braces from me:
- use crest whitening strips to get rid of that yellow cast
- get a teeth cleaning at the dentist; sometimes the orthodontist doesn’t file off all the glue
- wash your retainers in COLD WATER not warm water

The yellow lines closer to your gingiva is the dental cementum layer which covers the root of a tooth. It is naturally yellow and it won’t change color no matter how hard you are brushing. It is also a cause for sensitivity because microscopic channels in this layer send signals from the surroundings towards the nerve inside a tooth.
I’m very surprised they did not mention your gingival recession that is causing the yellowish look and sensitivity. Normally the cementum layer is not visible if you have the right brushing technique(or only in the elderly) because the gums and bone cover it.
I’m assuming you brushed your teeth too harshly for long years.
I always recommend my patients electric toothbrush with pressure sensor.
Unfortunately your gingiva is going to stay at the same level(unless you have surgery for it) but you can maintain this level by proper brushing.

I would highly recommend the Crest whitening strips. My suggestion, use them after 30 minutes of brushing to prevent sensitivity and leave on for the recommended amount of time, and imo it works and looks WAYYY better than the whitening process for me, but whatever works for you is fine! but i love the whitening

Ortho assistant here. Just a few things worth clarifying!

1. The white squares on a person’s teeth after removing braces are not from staining. It’s decalcification of your enamel from leaving plaque around your braces. We usually recommend little brushes shaped like Christmas trees to get under your wire and around your brackets to prevent this.

2. Your retainers were likely tight when you first put them on because you had them mailed and your teeth had already started to shift back to their original position. Your teeth need that stability asap after braces because your teeth will always want to move to their original position. Typically they fit better than that at first as we try to take the braces off and place the retainer for the first time in the same day. ☺️

3. I think it’s likely that the ortho team they did clean the teeth as part of their process. Before we apply braces in my office, we always use a chemical “etch” that removes any gunk off the teeth themselves. It’s just squirted on the frontal tooth surface where the bracket will go. Regular dental visits and very thorough oral hygiene are still essential during and after braces. Oral hygiene is actually even more important during braces because there’s something holding plaque and food residue to the teeth at all times so we have to put in extra effort to remove it. Orthodontists move the teeth, not necessarily deep clean them.

I would recommend that you get those denture cleaning tablets and use that to clean your retainers until you get out of shower. Then after you brush your teeth, use your toothbrush and whatever toothpaste left over on your toothbrush is on to help clean your retainer. Clean only in the inside to keep them from getting cloudy.

So helpful! Just got my braces off last Thursday. Waiting for my retainer. Btw there's such a thing called "remineralizing cream/paste" that you're not supposed to brush your teeth with just apply on your teeth and go to sleep. It helps best with sensitivity.

the reason ur teeth are whitening at the top is because retainers are made to be really tight to your teeth. this pushes the whitening gel to the top and it doesnt evenly coat ur teeeth. the extra pressure from the gel could also cause the pain. ask your dentist about a whitening tray and use that instead during the day. (the tray is slightly bigger than ur retainer and will evenly spread the gel around your teeth.

It surprises me that most people didn’t know they had to wear it for the rest of their life because I was told like right before you had them put on and from the research I did prior. I thought everyone researched something they were going to do to themselves at least a little bit. Not saying you’re a bad person if you didn’t, just shocks me

That zoom whitening is no joke. I had the in office procedure after I got my braces off and that was the worst feeling that I’ve felt I think in a very long time. People call it the zingers where is random shooting pains that you cannot control. Your teeth look great.
