Amasya is one of the most beautiful cities in northern Central Anatolia. It is located in such a narrow river valley that it can rather be called a gorge than a valley, and many historical monuments have been preserved here. Most tourists come here to look at the tombs of the Pontic kings, carved 2 thousand years ago in the rocks above the city, but in Amasya you can also see the true masterpieces of Seljuk and Ottoman architecture.
When the influence of the Mongols waned at the end of the 13th century, the Ottomans appeared here, and soon Amasya became part of their rapidly developing state. Princes began to be sent here, who, preparing to ascend the throne, served here as provincial governors. Thus, in the Middle Ages, under the Ottomans, Amasya also flourished, and as a reminder of this, the most magnificent buildings in the city remained here. Amasya also developed as a theological center: in the 18th century there were eighteen madrasahs in which two thousand students were educated.
The Amasya Museum, also known as the Amasya Archaeological Museum, is a national museum in Amasya in northern Turkey that displays archaeological artifacts found in and around the city, as well as ethnographic items related to the history of the cultural life of the region.
The ancient fortress of the city was built on the most suitable place for defense - on the top of Mount Harshen. Therefore, it is also known as the Harshen Fortress. This place is one of the most ancient Anatolian settlements. The fortress has 8 levels of defense, and the rock itself, on which the building rests, is located at an altitude of more than 650 meters above sea level and 315 meters above the level of the mentioned river Yeshilyrmak. The most original places of the fortress are the top of the fortress with a waving flag and the Palace of Girls (Kyzlar Sarayi). The "Palace of Girls" is located on the side of the mountain and rests on the rock at the back, forming a wide terrace. Now there is a cafe with a very beautiful view.
