Emotional Support Animal Rule Changes (On Airplanes)

Here are the new emotional support animal pet policy changes for air travel, as well as for service dogs. The department of transportation and the airlines have changed terms for emotional support animals and service animals. If you are trying to fly with an emotional support animal for free, these travel tips are for you. If you want to fly with a service animal, this video will give you the new definition. I will also give you the most important tip for flying with your pet plus a few options at the end of the video.

So glad they are doing this. Occasionally i had a student with a true service dog in class. They are so quiet and well behaved that you do not notice them once the novelty wears off. You are not allowed to pet them. They are there to work.

emotional support is not something service dogs task for, needing emotional support is not a disability. ptsd is a disability, and service dogs can be trained to do dpt, alert before episodes, crowd control or crowd blocking to keep people away (BIG trigger), etc. having a fear of flying or just wanting your dog to be on a plane with you is not a disability. it is a common misconception for people wanting to bring their pets onto flights or into stores that emotional support is a task, and it is not. i have heard too many people claim their dog is an "emotional service dog", which are just ESA's. service dogs can provide emotional support to their handler, but it is NOT a task and does not mean that the dog is a service dog. a service dog must be tasked trained to be an actual service dog, like doing dpt, guiding, balance work, crowd control, medical or psychiatric alerts, ASD work, and more but theres many to list.

so no, you cant bring your "service dog" anywhere you want if it's for emotional support, and god help me if it's not trained.

edit: and emotional support itself is not a disability.

Thanks for all the good info. I thought I understood it all and your videos re-enforces that I did! I was in a facebook travel group the other day and some poster said that you could just "declare" your dog a service animal and that would be good enough. I corrected the poster and many others chimed in. Just goes to show that there is still a lot of misinformation out there. Thanks!

Great explanation of the new rules and providing some options for those with emotional support animals. It's unfortunate that the service animal travel guidelines have been abused by a select few compromising the safety and sometimes health of other passengers and flight crew. Having experienced some questionable "emotional support animals" on a few flights myself and reading the number of passenger and crew complaints and incidents, I understand why airlines had to make these changes.

Please remember that it takes between 6 months and 2 years for your SERVICE DOG to be trained fully. Online "registries" do not make your pet a service animal. Please don't abuse laws that are in place for individuals with disabilities. I and my service dog thank you.

Thank heavens! I’m asthmatic and cat dander is a real issue as I am allergic and will begin wheezing and having trouble breathing within a short time of exposure to a nearby cat.

Thank you for sharing. There is a section that is not necessarily the correct info, but I know what you mean. When you say “you can take an emotional support animal that is a trained service dog”, I think it would be better to clarify that if you need psychiatric support from a dog, they would have to be trained with tasks that specifically help you. The dog just being around you and providing emotional support without doing a task for you is not considered a service animal, it is considered a pet in the airline travel circumstance. There are psychiatric service dogs for autism, ptsd, dissociation, bipolar, panic attacks, etc, but what makes them a service dog is the training they specifically learn to help the disabled handler. Therapy animals are trained for group settings or in court room settings and are not the same as service animals who only provide service to one handler.
This is one of my special interests so I just wanted to speak about some things I think would benefit any one who looks at the comments!

"A very few pet owners have abused the rules". Some pet owners have stuffed their 25# dogs into carriers. The animals can't stand up, turn around, etc. Occasionally (just occasionally) they liberate them mid-flight and let them stand and piss on the seats. They post there "adventures" on social media. I have traveled with a very good pet (proper planning, thorough pet visit within ten days before travel, vaccines, "medical health certificate" by the vet as required by state law, etc.). SuSu, Babee, and Sir Lancelot, from what I have seen, didn't even have a shave and an eye wash.
Some people are just too cheap or poor to travel with pets domestically.

As someone who has spent time training service dogs. As service dog is trained to perform a task. A emotional support animal is NOT a trained animal. What you are saying around 2:50 is misleading because you’re combining the two. Also therapy animals are for other people NOT the handler. The ADA website is a great resource.

My dog was travelling for a year as ESA and on 1 of her flight the lady on my left side borrowed her as she was going home for a funeral, so very bad emotionally and she was so thankful at the end of the flight that my dog helped her during these 9 hours flight! Too bad, people abused it! It was a game changer for real people that needed them...
