Another fun thing is that while Norway became more or less a Danish colony after a while; Sweden fought the Danes with an insistence that drove some Danish Kings insane. Every time a new king had to be elected, the Swedes would negotiate terms trying to gain more power for themselves.

Sometimes, the Danes tried going to war to force their candidate for the crown with mixed results. If they were victorious in those wars, they would place trusted subordinates as "Fogdar" (hard to translate but tax collector / enforcer).

Said Fogdar always tried to get more than they had right to but any who became too greedy would look out of their castle during the winter and wonder where all the armed Peasants came from. The peasants almost always won in the end.

It was not by any means a stable political alliance. In fact, the Swedish War of Independence was precipitated by over fifty years of on-off conflict within the Kalmar Union.

I request one on the Hanseatic League! Because it wasn't *really* a political alliance, more like a huge traders' guild. Because of it's sheer size it also had (at times considerable) political power, but the main thing was always trade and enabling trade... For the members, of course 😂

Its ilportant to note that it wasnt controlled by Denmark, it was controlled by a Queen than gave Denmark preferential treatment.

The danes were also opressed by the monarchy.

As a Dane, who learned about the Kalmar union in school, I'm pretty surprised to say this is the first time I see a flag for it. And we learned about it as being just another version of the Nordic Union/Nordic version of EU, not anything as complicated as what this makes it seem to be.

Edit: It also weirds me out a bit that you refer to the Nordic countries as states and not either countries or kingdoms, but honestly, I can't remember when the Kalmar Union was a thing, so it could very well just be because it was back in the very confusing days of Nordic history where it was all kinda one country, but also separate countries or a collection of smaller kingdoms that had a type of "ruling King" who ruled over all the others - our history is weird and fascinating but also so confusing 😅

Well, the reason why it fell was that it wasn't a personal union.

Just to really nitpick, but the first map highlights Svalbard, which wasn’t discovered until 1596, meaning it cannot have been part of the Kalmar Union, because they didn’t know it existed.
