Foggy Headlight Restoration Using an Abrasive Steel Wool Soap Pad

Headlight restoration using an abrasive soap pad. I cleaned that yellow misty, hazy and foggy plastic film gunk off of my headlights with a brillo pad (SOS in the USA) both which are made from soap impregnated steel wool and some water and then sprayed a protective silicon clear coat over the lens after drying it off with paper towels of course.

Test a small area of the headlight to make sure that the old yellow coating of film is coming off.

Make sure you apply just a light coating of the silicon clear coat in one smooth motion to avoid runs in the finished layer.

If you do get runs just clean it again and try to be more sparing with the silicone spray.

It worked perfectly and the headlights shine like brand new.

The Brillo or SOS pads are just abrasive enough to get rid of that old plastic protective layer of gunk on the headlight without scratching the surface of the lens.

Both of these steel pad brands use steel wool that is softer than glass and have been used to clean glass and porcelain since they were invented over 100 years ago.

This is a quick and cheap method to bring your headlights back into tip top condition and most of what you need you probably already have in the kitchen. If not?

If not get yourself some on Amazon.

I can't believe how easy this was to do and took just 2 minutes. The silicone detailer protects the headlights from future dirt and grime.

Use an SOS pad - not steel wool. The SOS pad will remove the dirt and the yellow discoloration of the plastic lense. After that you can take some car polish and a clean cotton cloth to polish the lense to make it even clearer. Very quick, easy and inexpensive. Thanks for the video!

I got the same result using a handful of dirt that I swept from my garage floor

Would this work for yellowing oxidation?

Nice! Except you are using an S.O.S Pad - not a Brillo pad? Know this because S.O.S pads are blue, and Brillo pads are pink! (Normally wouldn't comment on something so trivial, but there really is a difference between the two products...S.O.S is far better)

Doesn't last and NO UV protection. Silicon is a lube not an proper coating. Any oil will make them look great temporarily.
