To make these simple rustic garden stairs you will need large logs or boards, and stakes made from smaller branches. This is great way to use up scrap wood from downed trees while making a functional trail in the garden.

I started to feel defeated when you showed how you were staking them in, knowing how expensive those stakes were going to be, how long it would take to find them, etc. Then I was elated to see you using wood! I'm in the process of doing this now. It's pretty easy especially if you have soft ground that isn't too rocky like I do. If you don't have a lot of logs or boards lying around 8 foot landcape timbers cut into 2 foot sections work perfect. For the stakes I used crepe mrtyle limbs I pruned a few months ago. Once they were cut to size they worked great as they're pretty thin but very strong.
