The line, "And Rohan will answer." Just gets the adrenaline going, such an amazing scene.

There was this ongoing theme with my friends while we were in college together. Anytime we needed 2-3 more people to do pretty much anything, we'd come running in like idiots and say "Gondor calls for aid". It was forbidden to say anything but "...and Rohan will answer". Miss those days.

Is it even possible to watch LOTR without getting goosebumps every five minutes!?

I write this to pay my respects to King Théoden AKA Bernard Hill.

"I go to my fathers. And even in their mighty company I shall not now be ashamed."

May you rest in peace.

You gotta admire Theoden.

Only a few days ago, he was all like "why should we come to the aid of those who did not come ours. What do we owe Gondor?". A perfectly valid question. Gondor didn't give them any help when Rohan's back was against the wall.

But as soon as the beacon comes in, and Gondor asks for help, Theoden isn't like "well I'm not going to do shit because Gondor didn't help us". No ifs or buts or maybes. He thinks for like a few seconds, ponders his actions, and then responds "and Rohan will answer".

Gondor didn't deserve an ally like Theoden.

Saruman mocked Theoden as a "lesser King" but in the end it was Theoden who not only led his people to the great fortress of Helms Deep, but also led the human force which reforged the ancient bond with Elves to fight the shadow, held the line at Helms Deep, sat side by side/council with the future King of Gondor, assured he received the Flame of the West, answered the call of Gondor after Gondor ignored Rohan's need, and led the charge into a massive battle line which broke the Orcs and inevitably saved Gondor/got Theoden himself killed in the process.

"Lesser King" is not associated with Theoden after all those deeds. He vaulted himself right to the top of the greatest Kings of Rohan after all that.

2 decades later and this scene still sends a chill down my spine.
Truly a masterpiece of cinema.

The fact that this scene isn't even in the books, but Peter Jackson was so faithful to the themes, tone, and storytelling of Tolkien he spun this into one of the most memorable and faithful scenes is so remarkable. Never has there been an adaption like this.

I love how this scene depicts how distant each beacon is from each other

1:57 love how even though the huge beacons are lit, the guys are still super enthusiastically waving at the other side, shows how much it means to them.

“And Rohan will answer” gives me chills every time. That anticipation between Aragon saying Gondor has called for aid and waiting for what Theoden will decide is just something.

He has joined his fathers, in whose mighty company he shall not now feel ashamed.

This is how the English were warned of the approach of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The entire south coast of England had a chain of beacons waiting. When the Spanish were spotted off the coast of Cornwall, the beacons were lit and the news flashed up the coast and eventually in to London where the army and the Queen were waiting.

"The beacons are lit. Gondor calls for aid!"
"And where was Gondor when the Westfold fell?"
