The Collection: Dweezil Zappa

In this episode of “The Collection,” host Mark Agnesi travels to Los Angeles, CA, to check out the incredible guitar collection of Dweezil Zappa. Growing up the son of musical icon Frank Zappa, Dweezil began playing guitar as a young child, and by age 12, had released his first single. Dweezil has performed as a solo artist, as well as recreating his father’s music with the project Zappa Plays Zappa. Over his career, Dweezil has amassed a massive collection of odd and obscure guitars, including many of his father’s original instruments, fretless and half-fretted guitars, a microtonal guitar, and a Kramer guitar given to him by Eddie Van Halen during a soundcheck at his middle school talent show. His love of modifying guitars and his quest for new sounds makes Dweezil’s collection anything but ordinary.

Dweezil is a phenom player, but three things I love about him. 1. He has is dad's brilliant understanding of music and tech. 2. Always looking for a different "thing" 3. He is super cool, every time when he is done playing, he always hands the guitar to Mark to try it out. A real musician!

I love the fact that this is a Gibson channel, but we get to see other brands as well. Love Gibson, for sure...but I really appreciate seeing other brands these great artists use, and why they use them. I give a lot of credit to Gibson for letting this happen. Dweezil really is a down to earth guy. Love the tales of Eddie mentoring him, and the compassion Ed showed. You can see Ed really had an impact on him, and he still gets emotional over it.

Dweezil is the son of one of the greatest musical Geniuses of all time, a great musician himself and a fantastic guitarist, but above all is the most humble and down to earthed guy. Bless you Dweezil. Such understated skill, talent and humanity in a compassionate and generous man. He worked so hard learning his dad's difficult music with utmost accuracy to share with us live again and introduce to new listeners. Zappa Plays Zappa in Santa Rosa CA was like Frank and the Mothers reincarnated but with better live production. Two of my favorite online highlights are Watermelon in Easter Hay (London 2013) and Inca Roads (Complete) from the ZPZ dvd, also on YouTube. The faithfulness to (and dare I say possible improvement on) the originals is awesome.

On a less upbeat note, there is Dweezil's interview on Mark Maron's WTF podcast, #718, where he emotionally describes the shameful treatment he received by his own mother and brother dealing with the estate after Frank's death. Even Maron was in tears.
