Fun fact Michio aka scientist turned talking head casually leaves out is that when rats or mice are given a ‘community’ within their closed environment, things like toys and obstacles and other rats/mice, they no longer abuse the substance; it’s only the rats that are kept in a prison cell that say ‘fuck it, ’ and get high at all costs.

This is a fundamental difference and was a huge breakthrough in substance abuse research and understanding. Humans that feel they are part of a community, who feel as though they belong and love a life of meaning, who have meaningful relationships and recreation, are far, far less likely to abuse substances to their detriment than those humans who either feel they have none of this, or actually really have none of this.

This only works when there's no better alternatives. So basically the mouse is wilfully committing suicide.

That only works when the mouse doesn't have access to a normal environment where it can socialise. The mouse that had a somewhat normal environment never touched cocain, but they did when they were isolated.

The mouse knew only a small cage (still significantly less stimulation than a dolphin in captivity) its entire life and was given a binary choice between pleasure and sustenance.
It chose to have as much pleasure as it could before it died. The dolphin knew there was more than pleasure and sustenance, so it made a choice for longevity.
So yeah... Whole thing makes sense.
... And it's really messed up what they put the mouse through. I hope the mouse was named Cypher... Because he KNEW the steak wasn't real, but he didn't care.
