I had the privilege to have a few lessons with him and I will never forget how I asked him what notes I should play in a particular song when playing a walking bass line. His response was that he can’t answer that and that I have to find out myself, find my own voice and way. I should focus on a great sound and being able to play the whole fingerboard. The rest will come. Have open ears and an open mind he said!

I Came here because Russell Hall mentioned first learning with Larry. I have been trying to get away from that square stance and bringing the neck closer to my head. It's challenging when you're self-taught. I'm slowly bringing that neck around and becoming less reliant on seeing the neck. Larry is fabulous all over the neck too.

I saw him play with his wife, Rebecca Martin. Really interesting to hear jazz musicians stretch out into other genres. That's what jazz is all about, learning how to stretch out and make that song your own.

Larry is such a great player! He does have somewhat of an unusual stance though, having the bass almost perpendicular to his body. I'd always been taught that that was not appropriate (due to the curve it usually causes in your left wrist), but it just goes to show that whatever works for you, do it.

Is he playing a specific form or is it more or less random within a key. ?

I just watched the Discover Double Bass videos on left hand position and Larry does it all "wrong"! But obviously it doesn't affect his ability to play!
