My oldest dog had a soul cat who passed a few years ago. That cat needed two years to warm up to the dog, but Watson (dog) just loved her. Uncharacteristically, since she usually only reserves instant love for humans. My youngest dog has a soul cat now, too. They clicked from day one, got each other. Feynman (kitten) crawled up into Iden's lap, and that was that. 🥰Animals can teach us so much about ourselves and each other.

This reminds me of my late cat and dog. My partner and I adopted a pit bull when she was a puppy. I had a cat that was, I think 14 at the time. My cat wanted NOTHING to do with her. I did not force anything onto her. It took a few months and she started getting closer to her. Eventually, they were best friends, never apart. They would play and my old lady cat was always the instigator.
My pit is sweet as can be. I never thought she would harm my cat or anyone else. But to see my old cat hold her own with a pit was actually beautiful. She was already declawed up front when I adopted her.
Unfortunately I had to euthanize her during Covid because she was dying of kidney issues. She would have been 23 in a few weeks at that time. My dog definitely went through a grieving process just like us.
