The Volkswagen Corrado VR6 sounds like a winner | Revelations with Jason Cammisa | Ep. 10

The recipe for a successful sports car is simple: great looks, great name, and a vocal engine.

VW's Scirocco replacement had gorgeous styling and an Italian-sounding name. But the supercharged G60 engine was a disappointment. Slower than the Scirocco 16V it replaced, the new-technology four-cylinder Corrado G60 didn't find many fans.

Resurrecting an engine design pioneered by Lancia in 1922, VW created the VR6 — originally called the RV6 internally, which was a 2.8-liter 15-degree narrow-angle V6/straight-six hybrid that fit in the place of the previous four-cylinder.

The original 12-valve VR6 is one of the best-sounding engines in a production car; combining the smooth, sultry sound of a straight-six with a wookie warble and none of a V-6's harshness.

It was a revelation then and now — and combined with Mk3 GTI suspension components, the Corrado SLC cleaned the floor of the supercoupe class in every performance metric.

Including price. It was easily the most expensive car in its class, which meant slow sales. Which is the fourth and final recipe in creating a special collector's car.

Remember all those years ago in 2003-2004 when Richard Hammond said this was going to be a classic? Now here we are, it’s officially a classic.

The bit with the head gaskets to visualize packaging was brilliant

Who doesn't love the VR6, making that sweet music?

I love the Corrado VR6 so much, a few years ago I found one with a manual and only 35k miles on it and it looked and ran like it was brand new. Then when I took it in for service, to give it a complete checkup, my mechanic wrecked it. 😣 His insurance wanted to total it over body and suspension damage, because many of the panels were nearly impossible to find, but he did the right thing and fixed it all himself out of his own pocket. The good news is the paint work on these from the factory is horrible, true orange peel delite, so it gave us the opportunity to strip it down completely and give it a gorgeous 12-stage paint job in the original Mystic Blue, plus we replaced the brakes with Brembo red caliper 6-pots in the front and 4s in the back, and upgraded to adjustable MacPherson struts and dampers. I still drive it today and it's just as fun as the day I got it.

This was my dream car as a teenager. Now, as a 40-something year old, I'm still keeping my eye out for one.

The head gasket visualization was really clever, much like the red tape on the Mach E

I’m so happy and grateful that Hagerty has let Jason flex his creative muscles on a series like this, with a passion for cars that we all want to vibe with. I remember hearing on an early Carmudgeon episode that he wanted a platform that let him exercise his specific creative vision and passion - I think Hagerty answered his call.

The VR6 is legendary to me. I remember my buddy in highschools dad had a GTI with the VR6 engine and a tuned exhaust. It was the most beautiful engine sound I had ever heard in person. You could hear it revving up a mile away and knew exactly what it was. I have always had an affinity for those engines ever since. Just a beautiful noise 👌

The VR6 is an underrated automotive masterpiece. The exhaust note is phenomenal, especially in the 3.2l flavor. I was in the community for many years, and knew a couple people who had a Scirocco & Corrado VR6 units on the west coast. Beautiful lines they have. It's great you did a piece on them. They are deserving of being championed more in the community as a whole.

That Corrado is still a great looker in 2021. Love that design a lot.

Always loved the Corrado!

First car I purchased was an '80 Scirocco in '89. Cheap alpine white repaint with Enkie directional rims wrapped in 205-55-15 Pirelli tires, and a Alpine knock-off brand radio with four 6x9's in the rear deck. Ahh to be young again!

Thank you for reviewing this beautiful automobile sir.

Brilliant video. My wife has owned 3 Corrados and I still have her last VR6... I learned more about Corrados in these 12 minutes than in all the years we've owned these great cars! Thanks!!

The writing on this channel is excellent and I love the perspectives Jason brings. He always keeps his obvious love of cars tempered with a healthy measure of reason and a willingness to criticize the industry and its more peculiar choices.

I remember wanting one of these in white so bad. The vr6 sounds good and it’s so smooth. Awesome work as usual Jason.

Didn't know that fun fact about the mirrors being shared with the McLaren F1 lol

I have a Corrado G60 and believe me after some modifications to the engine it becomes a monster and if you use the TDI gearbox top speed is over 250km/h. And its such a beautiful car, it turns heads. I feel 30 years younger when I floor the gas pedal and this thing gives me the chills everytime.

Someone at the end of my street had one of these in a gorgeous maroon colour when I was growing up and I thought it was the best thing ever.

I like how Jason managed to get his Scirocco into the video a couple of times
