Plates of ice are lighter than water so they float. Plates of cooled lava are heavier than liquid lava so they sink. They sink at an angle almost parallel to the crust opening up windows to the liquid lava.

I was just about walk my kids over a seethingly hot fresh lava field crust to fry some eggs for a picnic, then I watched this.... you're a true lifesaver. Thanks.

Best thing to do when you're stuck in that situation is pull yourself onto a nice solid rock and daydream of the Shire, Bag End, and Rosie Cotton dancing. And hope Gandalf hurries with those eagles.

It's s good thing you made this video. Lots of people die every year by falling into lava by walking on lava crust. Very informative, thanks!

Our volcano Mount Paektu hasn't erupted since 946 AD, it remains one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history. We are lucky to have such a beautiful volcano

That you have to tell anyone that is frightening. People die every year falling into geyser hotsprings.

Walked on lave "bridges" with red lava flowing underneath on Mt. Etna back in my Navy days. Melted the soles of my sneakers. Young and dumb but still here.

I seriously thought I would see someone fall into lava, so happy I didn't.

If that were me standing next to it, I would have gotten splashed by a bubble popping for sure.
