Overlooking the River Tywi near the town of Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales sits the imposing ruin of Dinefwr Castle. This impressive structure has an almost industrial feel, with its cylindrical tower complete with a walkway which can be reached only from the battlements.
The castle was originally constructed by Rhodri the Great, although none of this castle remains. Rhodri's grandson, Hywel Dda- who was king of most of Wales, made this castle his chief seat. The castle is thought to have been rebuilt by Rhys ap Gruffydd who was the ruler of Deheubarth from 1155 to 1197.
Because the English sometimes struggle with the pronunciation of Welsh words, a problem we are often guilty of ourselves, the name Dinefwr is, from time to time, anglicised as Dynevor.
