This is the CD reissue of a mid-'80s limited edition cassette. The Weird Tapes No. 5: Live '76 & '77 gathers material from two unidentified shows from 1976 (tracks one, two, and eight) and 1977 (the rest). The first lineup includes Dave Brock, Bob Calvert, Nik Turner, Simon House, Paul Rudolf, Simon King, and Alan Powell, while the second adds Aidrain Shaw but loses Turner, Rudolf, and Powell. The sound quality is poor, but some hard-to-find songs are included, such as "Back on the Streets" and the very good "Assassins of Allah," which includes nice violin work from House. The other highlight is a spirited version of "Steppenwolf"; this track also includes a radio spot advertising the release of the album Quark, Strangeness and Charm. Not an essential item by any means, this CD will nevertheless please the dedicated fan.

When Paul plays lead, who plays bass here? I suppose Brock!
