It's an unwritten rule. Men don't pee beside each other in a public restroom. If there are only two urinals then one of us will use the stall.

There are rules of etiquette when using urinals. You always leave an empty one between you and the next guy, if possible.

Meaning that the 2nd guy (troll face) should have gone to the 3rd or 5th urinal, thus leaving the last one or the middle one available for the third guy, respectively.

By taking the 4th urinal, he has eliminated the possibility of the 3rd guy being able to follow the rules, since he will now be shoulder to shoulder with at least one of them.

Troll face is evil, and must be punished.

Guys tend to get wierd about another guy coming in and using the urinal right next to them, as if they think the new guy is trying to get a peek in your pants. So the secodn guy (saying 'checkmate') by taking the 4th urinal when the first one is in use, creates a situation where all the urinals are either in use or next to one in use, thereby making the 3rd guy unable to use any urinal without violating that wierd unspoken rule.

You don't want to stand in the splash zone because with penises things happen when the urine flows, sometimes the stream splits, sometimes there's an odd unexpected trajectory. It's not a bro bonding moment.
