I am a complete and total introvert and one of the few who thrived during the pandemic. Not having to go out, not having anyone drop over ever was heaven on Earth for me.

"walls actually have value.... who knew." 😆🤣🤣😂 The delivery on this was great! As someone who loves a cozy lounge room that doesn't smell like our dinner. I am all for the broken floor plan. I understand why people like the open plan, but for me, it has always been a no.

I like how you explained quiet luxury... Were not decorating to show off our wealth, but we're making a formal, cozy, timeless space that all people, no matter their style, can enjoy. I aim for a timeless, classy, proper, and cozy home, avoiding high trends.

As someone who works for a massive Italian fashion company - you're absolutely right about allowing brands into ones home. The only symbology allowed in the house should be about you or people who live with you.

My mother had several designer items of whick I luckily inherited when she passed. But they don't have huge labels screaming at you. She was of the generation that said if it has large labels all over it, it looks cheap and is probably an imitation. I actually agree.

I love a partially open floor plan. Don’t like kitchen all closed off, but I do like escaping to a separate dining room so I can eat in peace without seeing the mess I just created. And then escaping to a separate TV area so I can continue to ignore the dishes, or the noise created by whomever was kind enough to clean them for me.

I love to see wood come in big. It’s an absolute reaction to cold, sterile white everything and grey surfaces. Yay for wood! The more rustic, the better! 🙂

For SO long my parents held out that their 70’s closed-floor-plan house was going to “come back” to the trend, (while I pleaded with them to “modernize” and knock down a wall or two). They both recently passed away, literally just missing the pendulum swing. But it did make that house surprisingly easy to sell! I had worried for years that whenever they or I eventually tried to sell it, nobody would be interested because it wasn’t open-concept.

I’m excited about seeing more semi-closed spaces. Just from a practicality standpoint of having walls for art, storage/shelves, and outlets.

My Grandmother had full-blown when they moved from the house she lived for 50 years to a new house closer to my mom. She kept calling the house a barn we never once realized why she said it because of her Alzheimer's. Someone finally said she wants a definitive room layout. Made perfect sense then!

I love how you said “the announcement of your wealth.”And it’s gaudy & it’s cheesy! I agree and no need to apologize cause you are a spot on!

I am so looking forward to the end of the open plan kitchen&living room concept! I’ve been living in a flat like that and I hate the feeling I’m still in the kitchen when I’m already at the sofa. Also, the closed kitchen, if it’s big enough to put the table in there, is perfect for people with small children! You can feed a child without worrying that the content of a plate is going to ruin your carpet, couch, etc. Such rooms are made for getting messy and dirty sometimes but at the same time are easier to maintain. The same goes for if you have pets. I love them, but I really think that a dog’s bowl belong to the kitchen and not the living room.
Also, those kitchens can be very cozy places! I have the best memories from times spent in my grandma’s kitchen where I accompanied her with cooking or simply playing on or under the table.

As a third-generation vintage junkie, I have to say that most thrift stores aren't really the best places to find vintage homeware and furniture. There are a few second hand stores that specialize in vintage furniture, ranging from dusty antique stores to heavily-marked-up mid-century modern specialists. In these cases, you are paying for not only the furniture but also the costs of running an in-person storefront. The emptier the space, the more each piece will cost, but usually you are also paying for better quality and curation. You should expect to be able to get good information on the materials, construction, and designer of a piece in a high-end boutique. If you need the curation, and have the budget, the extra cost can be worthwhile to get a hold of a genuine, high-quality piece. Chances are they aren't trying to bilk you, they are just trying to make enough to pay their staff and the commercial rent. By contrast, a tiny weird old overstuffed pawnshop is probably going to have a lot of junk, but lower prices, and potentially good value hidden gems. But the best bet has always been estate sales and downsizing sales. People in those circumstances are looking to get rid someone else's stuff, not make a profit, and these days most estate sales are online, meaning you can bid from the comfort of your home. While some people have a lot of junk, others might have a whole house full of great stuff to offload. Just be careful not to bid more than you are willing to pay. It's helpful to have a lot of knowledge about the styles you hope to collect, so look for resources. The internet can be good, but also look for books and specialist magazines. Learning about types of wood is also valuable, because it can tell you more about the age and quality of a piece. If the materials aren't right for the period, a piece is probably a lower-quality reproduction rather than an original. Also be careful of flipped pieces. While some furniture flippers care a lot for their craft and can expertly repair or tastefully repurpose damaged pieces, others may simply slap on some paint and call it a day. While paint can be appropriate, keep in mind that it may indicate underlying damage to the wood surface (if there is one) and cause unintended problems like sticking drawers when used improperly. Traditionally, having an intact original finish on an antique or vintage piece increases its value. This does not always mean bare wood--some pieces may have always been painted, including those with period-specific folk art. However, most pieces aren't museum quality artifacts. At the end of the day, what someone does with a 1990s buffet is none of my business. Just be sure to know what you are buying and figure out if the price is worth it for you.
