I’ve been a Marriott Manager for 14 years. I can say in recent years even before Covid, we had gotten rid of throw pillows that don’t have slip covers and the skirts at the bottom of the beds. These were rarely washed. However, the beds were always stripped and we wash all linen on the beds including the comforters every time a guest stayed in them.

The toilets, sinks, bathtubs should also be thoroughly cleaned. After doing many inspections after housekeeping cleaned the areas to be most concerned about is the light sockets, door knobs and handles. These areas were the most frequently missed.

Never go wrong with lysol wipes. They're handy.

Thanks for the tips! Especially in these times. Maybe hotels will make use of cleaning robots, places humans don’t wanna clean, get cleaned.

We always take our own blankets and pillows with us when we travel so that we have enough pillows and don't have to use pillows that other people have slept on or dirty blankets. Sometimes I will take sheets as well and put those on the bed after we check for bed bugs. Never take you personal belonging into a room until you have checked for bed bugs! Even 5 star Hotels can have them.

Btw I would worry more about the ice machines and not that people dig around in them. More that they may have not been serviced. If you see orange around the water edges too. That includes all water sources thats the first step of mold.

Oh, this one speaks to me! I always take wipes if I fly or lysol spray if I drive. I wipe off all door knobs, light switches, TV remote, and never go barefoot on the rug. Love all your tips! Keep them coming. Safe travels.

Or we could not worry about germs at all and just switch the hotel room TV over to a good Highlander rerun, lol.
Actually, first time I saw Highlander was yrs ago on a shoot in Toronto on a hotel TV. My girlfriend and I are finally watching the whole series in its entirety on Peacock (treating it like a must-see Sopranos, Mad Men or GOT broadcast experience.) Well written, filmed and acted by all, Mr. Paul. Safe travels to you, sir. ✝

As a trained health caregiver it is astonishing that people need to be instructed to wash their hands! Folk just don't seem to have sense.

Yes, don’t forget the remote, light switches, handles or pulls on drawers, faucet handles and door knobs!😬. In other words, clean the room yourself!😆

One time on a cruise ship, the pillow smelled SO BAD like rank B.O. I set it on the floor away from the bed but when the cleaning crew came in, they put it back on the bed.

I had to smell each pillow to find it again to get it off the bed! Gratefully it had a balcony because I was able to put it out there.

Another time, I was at a dive hotel in Korea and literally slept on the floor because the bed had large...stains...all over the sheets.

UGH! I'm itching as I write this, but I need to get it out of my system: you really want to use the bathroom AFTER I've used it!
Whenever I use the public washroom at work, I take the spray bottle of disinfectant and a wad of paper towel to spray the toilet, then the paper dispenser where I'll set the spray bottle after use. I wipe down that paper dispenser, then use the dampened towel to close and latch my stall door. I then use dry paper towel to dry the toilet seat and inside rim of the toilet seat which had time to enjoy their disinfection, " from most clean to most dirty." The used paper goes straight into the paper disposal without touching the lid or rim. Then and only then can I take care of my own business on my throne. I repeat the process after I'm finished my business, most clean to most dirty, and spray the toilet water surface before flushing since there is no toilet lid.

In any hotel-motel where I have stayed, all touch-ables get handled by several disinfectant wipes (not the same wipe for all surfaces and articles). I include the room key/swipe card, the whole alarm clock, not just the buttons, the bedside lamp and its on-off pull chain or switch, room light switches, AC unit controls, bedside phone, table and chairs in room, TV remote, and bathroom just like at work. Failing any wipes or travel-sized spray Lysol, the little mickey of VODKA in the mini-fridge works like a charmingly effective disinfectant: it is anti-microbial, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and doesn't leave a chemical odour! I buy one off the drink cart whenever I travel by plane or train and disinfect my armrests, fold-up food tray, and take it with me to use the bathroom. Failing to access these, cheap white vinegar also kills baddies dead, and its odour only lasts a few minutes. BONUS: both vinegar and vodka shine up the chrome like nobody's business!
These steps take a few minutes, but I'd rather have peace of mind knowing things are clean and sanitized because I cleaned them.
As for the bed linen, I travel with lavender sachets and a small can of spray--bedbugs, mites, fleas and such cannot STAND the smell of lavender. I pull apart the bedding to check. I do NOT lay out my clothing atop the bed at ANY time; every closet has hangers for reasons! I insist on a spare top sheet to cover my bead spread. I use the luggage rack and never place my luggage on the carpeted floor! I wear flip-flops or shoes and never step bare-footed. I lay a fresh towel outside the shower for my feet.
Not saying I'm Mrs. Clean(-Freak), but I hope this helps anyone who travels and faces these situations. I wish you many years of safe travel and optimal health!
