According to the writers of the song Jerry and Layne, the song was about their respective girlfriends at the time and they both wrote verses. Anyone that says all AIC songs are about drugs are not right

This is one of the major pitfalls of knowing Layne’s backstory an ultimate fate. Not every Alice In Chains song is exclusively about drugs. But knowing what we know it’s hard not to read into it.

Laynes voice… note selection… phrasing… it is on another level. Saw them live way back in the day… as an opening act. It changed my life. The most genuine vocalist I had ever seen or seen since.

I've been listening to this song for like 20 years. This song made more sense to me before I knew what the lyrics actually were. LOL

She is the one who overdosed and died. Her look like ice. Did she call my name? As if asking "did she call out for help?" Was I so stoned myself that I missed my chance to save her?
She don't want me to cry... A reference to her asking to not mourn her too long. But he does anyways, thus, I think it's going to "Rain When I Die." Meaning he will mourn her until his own death, because he feels guilty for not being able to save her or himself. As if to say his weakness caused her death. And in a way it did. And so he lies to himself and continues his addiction to the drugs that killed his love. Because in his twisted addicted mind, that's the only way he can remember what he lost.
