In scope management planning phase, there are 4 processes, and of of this is, define scope.
Define Scope is the process of developing a detailed description of the project and product. The key benefit of this process is that it describes the product, service, or result boundaries and acceptance criteria. Since all the requirements identified in Collect Requirements may not be included in the project, the Define Scope process selects the final project requirements from the requirements documentation developed during the Collect Requirements process. It then develops a detailed description of the project and product, service, or result.
Like all other processes, there are ITTOs in this process.
The goal outcomes and outputs of this process are:
Project scope statement
Project documents updates like
• Assumption log
• Requirements documentation
• Requirements traceability matrix
• Stakeholder register
The project scope statement is the description of the project scope, major deliverables, assumptions, and constraints. The project scope statement documents the entire scope, including project and product scope. It describes the project’s deliverables in detail. It also provides a common understanding of the project scope among project stakeholders. It may contain explicit scope exclusions that can assist in managing stakeholder expectations. It enables the project team to perform more detailed planning, guides the project team’s work during execution, and provides the baseline for evaluating whether requests for changes or additional work are contained within or outside the project’s boundaries. The detailed project scope statement, either directly or by reference to other documents, includes the following: product scope description, deliverables, acceptance criteria and project exclusions.
This is difference of project charter and project scope statemen in PMBack guide 6th edition table 5 dash 1.
What do we need to have this outcome? What are the inputs?
Project charter- this is after develop project charter during initiating phase under intigration management.
Project management plan like
• Scope management plan
Moving forward, we also need Project documents like:
• Assumption log
• Requirements documentation
• Risk register
Therefore by input of requirements documentation , an output of collect requirements process, it is now safely said that define scope comes after collect requirement process and plan scope management process.

Organizational process assets
For these inputs to get the desired outcome, we need to process these through tools and techniques, we need the following:
Expert judgment
Data analysis like:
• Alternatives analysis
Decision making like:
• Multicriteria decision analysis
Interpersonal and team skills like:
• Facilitation
Product analysis
These are the ITTO's of this process. Having these outputs of project scope statement and project document updates , we will be able to rightfully define the scope.
