5 Tips For Using PICRYL - The World's Largest Public Domain Search Engine

There's a great tool to help locate public domain images, illustrations and photographs called PICRYL. Public domain images are free to use (even for commercial purposes). You can basically do anything you want with this images. They are great for creating print-on-demand images for sites like Redbubble and Etsy.

One thing people should be aware of when using free images commercially is that famous people retain a copyright on their face (at least in the US). And, like other types of copyright, that can remain in place even after they're dead. So, before you use a photo of Marilyn Monroe or Elvis Presley, check to see if their estates still have a copyright on their face (and/or name) and in what capacity. (Images that are not exclusively their face, like that movie poster, are not subject to that type of copyright.)

Taking pictures of a celebrity and putting them in a newspaper or magazine is not an issue, even if you're making money by selling the newspaper. But taking a picture of them and then using their image and name on your coffee shop is not allowed. So you have to be careful to make sure that your use is allowed.

Except that after three pages of any search the images blur out and a pop up window appears making it mandatory that you sign up for a subscription in order to continue your current search. At least that’s my experience.

While "times" will yield the pixel count, I think that it's meant to express the dimensions, ie. "by", like 2x4 for lumber. But thanks, awesome resource!!

Great. Search a topic and then when I go through the pages, I get a "UPGRADE" notification and all images are blurry!!
