Mandolin For Fiddlers - Fiddle Lesson

Here's a lesson for fiddlers who want to learn the mandolin.

It's a little easier for fiddlers to learn mandolin because both instruments have the same strings: GDAE. This means the left-hand finger patterns are the same. If you're a fiddle player, then learning mandolin is a simpler translation process than learning something totally different like drums. Kind of like going from Spanish to Italian. If you're a fiddler trying to learn the drums, then it's more like going from Spanish to Mongolian.

Three skills you need to learn for the Fiddle to Mandolin transition:
1. Picking
2. Strumming
3. Chords

Big takeaway: You can start learning these skills RIGHT NOW with your fiddle.

So pick up your fiddle and let's get started!

“Wait, what is FiddleHed?” FiddleHed is the fun way to learn fiddling online. I made a progressive fiddle course to help you on each step of your fiddle journey. Plus, there's a supportive community that meets on zoom for office hours, group lessons and small student groups 💃🏻🕺🏾

Let me know if you have questions, and thanks for watching...🙏

Now, go fiddle with it...🎻

This is a suggestion from an old southern lady. When you sing Oh Susana and you get to "I come from Louisiana" try changing how you pronounce Louisiana.
In the south, it's sung "I come from
Lu•zee•ana"
it cuts out one syllable and fits the rythm better.

In a way it would be like the difference between;
Whiskey before breakfast
and
Whiskey prior to breakfast

However you do it, you could still can pick a mandolin or play a fiddle using your toes to bow than I, as a student of yours will ever be able to do.

The information and study aides on your website and in the course, exceed by far, any other fiddle instruction I've researched. You also have a very calming, down to earth style. And last, everyone learns in different ways. I'm an older ( fiftylevin 😉 ) year old beginner. Your course allows for that. For me, personally, that was the deciding factor when I was deciding on what course to take.

Thank you.

There's no reason anyone should listen to me. But I played (at) mandolin before taking up fiddle. There's definitely a lot of benefits from knowing one when you learn the other.

I started out as a guitar player and Then I actually got a fiddle 1st then a mandolin. The mandalorian has been way easier for me to play But like I said I'm originally a Guitar player

Love it! I have thought about getting one for a long time. I think the best reason is to help you find where the frets go on a fiddle. If you try to play higher on the neck (and are like me) you get lost up there a lot

I would play more of my fiddle but the d string sits to low on the bridge and it clashes with the other strings when I try to push down on the string

I got a question. I acquired a mandolin anda fiddle at the same time. My emphasis and priority is learning the fiddle however. Does basic learning of the mandolin make it easier to learn the fiddle? I already play guitar so I have a good working knowledge of music theory. Awaiting your answer and thanks for your videos
