Solution: Just put the toy in the cart, make it the last item at checkout, then just tell the cashier you don't want it. That way it's problem solved, and the kid won't freak out until you get home. It's that simple!

I would have carried the kid out in the car and told the kid: If you scream one more time, there will be no candy or TV for a week.

If the kid kept screaming, I would make that a week without TV or candy. Kids must know that a parent’s words matter and that their behaviour has consequenses. Consequenses that could make their parent angry/disappointed or happy. They must learn that a happy parent means happy days for them too. Therefore, as a kid I must do what is required and expected of me.

If you can’t do that, you as a parent is only a shadow of what you should have been. And a shadow has no power alone. Be more than a shadow. Be understood and heard. Fair but never cruel. It’s that simple.
