----------ABOUT THE VIDEO----------

This video was originally uploaded to our other channel, Casual Navigation, back in 2018.

An "in depth" look at Rule 15 of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, the COLREGS. The COLREGS are the rules of the road that vessels must obey at sea to avoid collisions.

Rule 15 details crossing situations. In this video I go into detail about each part of the rule and give a few examples of how to apply the rule at sea.

----------RULE 15----------

Rule 15: Crossing situation

When two power-driven vessels are crossing so as to involve risk of collision, the vessel which has the other on her own starboard side shall keep out of the way and shall, if the circumstances of the case admit, avoid crossing ahead of the other vessel.

Great Vid, well presented and shown. One thing to consider, which is a situation I have encounted at sea, is when a vessel is not exactly on your Starboard beam, but slightly aft of it and almost...BUT not quite aft of 22.5 degrees abaft her beam, on paper it is clear who is stand on, but in practice less clear. It was a sitaution that i was also presented with during my Mates Orals. 13d is your answer ;-)

Two power driven vessels. I'm in a slow boat going 5 knots and other is coming from the starboard side 25 knots and there is a risk of collision. What should I do. If the fast boat hits my boat, is it my fault because I didn't make way? Quite hard to make any movement to any direction when the other one is 5x faster. If I aim behind from it, it can make the situation worse if the other boat have plans to pass me from behind

Is the vessel with the tow considered as a power driven and rule 15 applies or goes under rule 18?
