Factotum Fabricor Container Home in Grafton, Wisconsin, USA. Shipping containers can be stacked facing up, down or even tuned upside down on end. In This Video, we bring you an amazing Shipping container home with one of the shipping containers turned upside down to form a staircase tower in Grafton, Wisconsin, USA. The 1,800-square-foot house is made of six shipping containers and takes advantage of the river views by having an open floor plan, large picture windows and a second floor cantilever bedroom that extends out into space. The first floor is three containers, all parallel with each other. The second floor is two containers perpendicular to the ones on the first floor. The sixth container is turned vertically on-end to accommodate the staircase tower.

Great looking design. I like the vertical tower stairwell. If it were mine I would have the stairs go all the way to the top. With a door to a rooftop deck

Love the home! Modern lines, and built like a tank. This is how I see it:
1. They have a locking mechanism under and on top of every unit, so they can be locked together and stacked 7 high on rough seas. This makes them earthquake proof and stable.
2. They are coated with a rust inhibiting and isolating paint. Will last over a 100 yrs.
3. Earthquake proof, fire resistant, hurricane proof, limits flood damage if you can bolt and seal the doors, and even bomb resistant.
4. Snow load with flat roofs in Wisconsin could be an issue, but then again, if this is solid steel. Snow does not equal the load of 7 containers stacked. If the unit on bottom can handle weight of 7 containers on top, snow is not an issue. In fact, snow will act like an insulating blanket over them. At 6:18, you can see the roof of this unit has been sloped for the snow load.
5. Large vertical stairwell acts as a light bringing skylight to each room. Wonderful. Downside is the space you have to heat during frigid Wisconsin winters, esp with all those windows sucking in the cold temps through glass. If they seal up windows, there will be no light.
6. Raising it off the ground is also good. Blanket of snow will insulate the empty space under house. In summer the empty space will cool down the house, as will the stairwell and windows.
7. Views are fantastic! What a great location!
8. Missed opportunity to build a terrace deck on lowest unit roof. Missed opportunity to build a sunbathing in the nude deck on top of stairwell, which could also be a fantastic spot for views.
9. Missed opportunity to add a staircase to lowest unit doors, which could be opened in summer and house cooled down with sliding screen doors behind the metal bolted doors.

Very nice and well planned. I would add an observation deck on top of the container which holds the staircase. Imagine the view from there..

There is no limit, for functional creativity, in use of space and volume.

Wow! This is nice. (The front entrance could be something a little more 😉)

It would be very helpful to always know the build cost and how it compares to homes in the area of similar size. Without this information it doesn’t make it very convincing to build one.

Beautiful home but I would soften it up a bit inside. In my opinion it doesn’t have to look like a warehouse inside. It should look warm and cozy inside. Not cold.

What's at the top of the tower? Getting ready to build something on a remote piece of land in Az and looking for a builder as well as ideas.

I would imagine this be far less maintenance over time compared to the wooden houses. Also, will insurance companies cover these homes. I personally think they are brilliant.

Shipping container living works if you plan on doing the work. New 20ft cube high boxes will be 5000/ less if used. 40ft cube high boxes will be 3500 used and 5000 new. I am here in raleigh nc.
