It 's true! Indeed the "lingua franca" was also called " service language", spoken mainly in the Mediterranean ports, there are the influences of Arabic, Spanish, turkish, greek languages. Thant's why we have Southern Italian dialects that bring the words to understand, for example in Greece and Spain ... dialects that have very different accents, dialect of my region for example is very similar to French :) thanks :) you are always very good! I disagree with Esperanto being anywhere near a lingua franca. By definition, there has to be a certain "network effect" (enough people using it, like Facebook in another context) for it to fulfill this requirement. Even though it is 120 years old, it is still just an oddity that only interest linguists.

@rageagainstthebath there are various factors affecting what we do (time, availability, schedule, etc) but bear in mind the following stats...

It's like programming, a very logical language, but it doesn't look like natural language since the punctuations is different, and you don't need a capital letter for the first letter of a sentence.

@wordsoftheworld Brady, I appreciate those clips on words, but please consider even distribution of all your UoN related videos. I noticed that there are less physics, astronomy and chemistry videos than there used to be. Or maybe it's just me?

"Lingua franca" is italian.
"lingua" means "Language" and
"franca" is usually used near "zona" which means "zone" or "land", so it stands for an area between two countries which belongs to noone but it actually belongs to both of them.

@wordsoftheworld - do you plan to do any borader subjects like these on this channel? I'm very interested in linguistics and such, but a lot of the videos on this channel are very word-specific (I understand that's the MAIN premise). But videos like this are extremely interesting and (in my opinion) more informational

I have to admit that I really don't like Esperanto... The idea is cool and there are a lot of better versions of that sort of constructed language, but unfortunately Esperanto is still the most widely known and used... I just don't think it's the best possible one for the purpose. And it's definitely not as "universal" as people claim it to be: it's a very European language.
