DIAGRAM :
CONSTRUCTION: 1. Let A be a metallic sphere, mounted on coil 1. B and C are two smooth pulleys moved over a silk belt.
2. Comb D and E are comb shaped conductors placed near the pulley.
3. Comb D is connected to a battery of 10^4 volt.
4. The pulleys are continuously driven by an electric motor.
WORKING:
1. Due to high electric field near the comb D, air gets ionized.
2. The positive charges will get repelled and stick onto the belt.
3. They slowly reach near the comb E.
4. Due to induction, needle acquire negative and the sphere will acquire positive charge.
5. This process will continue until there's a limiting value of charge acquired on the sphere.
6. The leakage of charges from the sphere can be reduced by enclosing it in a gas filled steel chamber at very high pressure.
