A brief history of when Mohun Bagan won the IFA Shield.

On July 29, 1911, an all Indian club, Mohun Bagan AC beat East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 in the final of the coveted IFA Shield. Bagan’s win is considered as one of India's greatest ever sporting victories. The eleven players of that triumphant team became the first sporting legends of the country and are known as “the immortal eleven”.

The amazing thing about this video is that along with introducing Indian football to an international audience, it will also help millions of Indians learn more about their own history!

Also, one more facr, Mohun Bagan captain of 1911, after the game said that the British flag will come down when Mohun Bagan wins their next shield. Mohun Bagan won their next shield in August 1947. India became independent on 15th August 1947. 🙂

I think I cried a little - even though I am from the opposite end of the East Bengal - Mohun Bagan derby!

It is said that when the team was returning to the club with the Shield, a Brahmin pointed to the Union Jack atop the Fort William & asked – ” When will that come down ? ” Somebody replied that ” It will come down when Mohun Bagan will win the shield again.”
It may be a coincidence, but Bagan won their next shield in 1947 – the year of Indian Independence.

We, Mohun Bagan fans worship them as Gods. These lions among men have their statues erected in Mohun Bagan Lane, Calcutta.

Thank you ! Thank you Tifo ! You are the best ! Indians forget that the likes of Mohun bagan and East bengal are important for Indian Football. I hate the ISL ! I do you hope you make a video on the rivalry between these two.

It is said that "war is politics by other means." I would argue that futbol is politics by other means. Don't believe me? As Xherdan Shaqiri & Xhaka who were sanctioned for flashing "The Eagle" of Albania in their match against Serbia at this years world cup. Matter of fact, maybe Tifo should do a piece on this as well! hmmmm??

Another spectacular video!

I hope it along with East Bengal, Minerva, Shillong Lajong, etc. become part of the I.S.L. I want a 20 team 1st division, 34 team 2nd division composed of teams of each state and union territories. 29 state teams and 5 teams where the 2 small union territories be combined to form a single team and a 3rd division consisting of knockout style playoffs between local teams of different states belonging to different conferences (North, South, East and West ) fighting it out to get promoted to the 2nd division, more F.I.F.A. licenced coaches for the national academies & clubs and baby leagues in all states and union territories starting from children aged 7 .

Each of these videos have the research of a history university dissertation. I feel like with the younger generation being so internet driven it is channels like this which will pave the way for more visual and condensed versions of history or other social science journals to appear and appeal to a far wider audience. Keep doing what you're doing, incredible seeing sports incredible effects on history.

"Amor Egaro!"
TIFOF does such sweet things sometimes. Personally, I don't follow Indian Football regularly but the history of having such a legacy in country with so many problems is a blessing a lot of us do cherish.
