I demonstrate my Lyle Jamieson hollowing rig as I turn a pencil pot. I chose this easy beginner project as I begin to use a laser guided hollowing system.

You will really love Lyle's hollowing tool. It's very simple to use and is built to be rock-solid. I got mine after using an articulated
arm system for a few years and wish I'd gotten it first. As always, an excellent video. Thanks.

The standard 3/4" boring bar is a good start and seems to be good for depths of about 8-10". If you want to go deeper (18-20"), then the 1 1/8" bar is worth the investment. I only have a few months experience, but if I have a wide opening like your pencil pot, I like the thicker boring bar because vibration is substantially reduced. Lyle's video is worth watching, and after you make a few hollow forms, watch it again :-)

We bought 4 of them for our turning studio. It is a good system ... you're going to love it.

I had purchased a used one several months ago but was not very comfortable using it. After spending a day with Lyle in July and doing a few hollow forms at home the past few weeks, I am starting to feel comfortable with it. It does make the process much easier. For those that can't afford one, I have used the Sorby multi-tip tools with good success. David Ellsworth sells hollowing tools also but he does not use a captive boring bar or a laser guide.

Mike, thank you for all of your great videos. I often search for what I am looking for “by Mike Peace”
I bought Lyle’s hollowing system... watching your video I noticed that you don’t mention how high to set the Carbide tip.
Should it be set at center or slightly lower than center?
Thank you

Nice, system.
I have noticed lately that a lot of my favorite turners on YouTube have been doing videos of expensive hollowing systems they have bought. Not to complain, but that doesn't do much for those of us that that are working out of the back of a 1 car garage and can't drop $600 on a fancy-schmancy system like that. My worry is that all of the teachers out here are going to out pace the people that are just learning how to turn and the basics are now going into the past tense.

I'm more than happy to see that all of you notable turners are getting into advanced hollowing techniques and hope to one day do so myself. But it seems like all of the channels are turning into advanced wood turning demos instead of "how to turn wood". Just my opinion. If I have offended anybody in any way, shape, or form, I am truly sorry.
